Government levies restriction on import of second hand goods

The government has imposed restrictions on import of second hand goods and re-conditioned spares of personal computers and laptops, a decision that could boost domestic manufacturing.

New Delhi:

The government has imposed restrictions on import of second hand goods and re-conditioned spares of personal computers and laptops, a decision that could boost domestic manufacturing.

Second hand goods other than capital goods have been put under the "restricted" category of the import policy, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification.

Importers have to take authorisation from DGFT before shipping products put under the restricted category.

On the other hand, imports of refurbished spares of capital goods have been made free subject to a chartered engineer certifying that such spares have "at least 80 per cent residual life or original spare".

In a separate notification, DGFT said used rails imports are "free subject to pre-inspection condition".
