(Bloomberg) -- Jeff Bezos added $1.97 billion to his fortune on Thursday, taking his gains so far this year to $2.6 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Shares in Amazon.com Inc. have risen by 4.1 percent in 2017, jumping 3.1 percent on Thursday alone as the company is said to be weighing a bid for bankrupt retailer American Apparel Inc. The rise may also reflect investor excitement around Alexa, Amazon's voice-activated assistant, and a strong holiday season for e-commerce, according to Brooke de Boutray, managing director and portfolio manager at Seattle-based Zevenbergen Capital Investments.
