Coronavirus cases in India crossed the 81-lakh-mark on Saturday amid a reopening economy and seasonal festivities. The pace of increase, though, has reduced with the country's active case tally now below the 6-lakh-mark.

The Covid-19 caseload in Mumbai's slum-dominated Dharavi area rose to 3,547 after four persons tested positive for the viral infection on Saturday, a civic official said.

Of the 3,547 cases, 3,123 patients have recovered from the infection and the area currently has 113 active cases, the official said.

Spread over 2.5 sq km with a population of over 6.5 lakh, Dharavi is considered to be Asia's largest slum.

Global Update:

Globally, cases crossed 45 million while deaths surpassed 1.18 million as of Friday night.

U.S. new cases rose to a record with hospitals under straing across the election-bound country. Italy and Greece reported infection records, increasing pressure on their governments to follow Germany and France in further tightening restrictions on public life. That leaves Europe’s recovery under threat after third-quarter growth exceeded forecasts.

Vaccine candidates by Pfizer Inc. and AstraZeneca Plc are getting accelerated reviews in the U.K., which could allow Britain to move ahead of European peers on clearing a shot.
