Va Tech Wabag Ltd. has bagged a €146-million desalination project in Senegal to enter the West Africa region.

The water treatment company is executing a desalination project in Tunisia in North Africa that's funded by funded by Germany-based KfW.

The Senegalese project, which aims to process 50 million litres of water per day, is funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency. The scope of the project would be engineering and procurement, operation and maintenance, and includes design, supply of electromechanical equipment, supervision of installation and commissioning followed by operation and maintenance of the plant.

The latest order consolidates Va Tech Wabag's business in the African continent, according to a company statement released on Friday. "The project was from Societe Nationale Des Eaux du Senegal, the National Water Company of Senegal, and it is worth about €146 million."

The project will be executed in consortium with Toyota Tsusho Corp. of Japan and France's Eiffage Genie Civil, the Indian company said. "Wabag will play the role of the technology and system integrator, while Eiffage will be responsible for construction and Toyota will co-manage the project."

"This plant when completed, will play a significant role in meeting the water demand of Senegal and also be an important reference project for Wabag," Deep Raj Saxena, chief executive of VA Tech Wabag's Middle East and Africa operations, said in the statement.
