BYD has pushed the boundaries of electric performance with its Yangwang U9 Xtreme, an all-electric hypercar that has crossed the 500 kmph mark to become the first production car to officially achieve the feat in a single-direction run.
The electric hypercar clocked an astonishing 503.17 kmph during a high-speed run in Abu Dhabi, surpassing its previous benchmark of 496.22 kmph and setting new production-car speed records.

The achievement marks a significant milestone for BYD, challenging the long-standing dominance of petrol-powered hypercars in the top-speed segment.

The record-setting attempt took place on a secured section of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed International Road (E11) in Abu Dhabi's Al Dhafra region. Professional racing driver Marc Basseng was behind the wheel when the vehicle reached the record speed on November 1, 2026.
The speed has been recognised by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), while Guinness World Records has acknowledged two achievements: the highest speed recorded by a production car in a single-direction run and the highest speed recorded by an electric production car in a single-direction run.
The latest run improved on the U9 Xtreme's earlier top speed of 496.22 kmph, recorded in September 2025 at the ATP Papenburg testing facility in Germany.
At 503.17 kmph, the car travels nearly 140 metres every second, highlighting the engineering challenges involved in maintaining stability, traction and control at such extreme speeds.
Unlike its previous attempt at a dedicated testing facility, the latest run was conducted on a closed 10-kilometre section of a public highway, including a seven-kilometre straight.
The vehicle also had to contend with challenging conditions, including high ambient temperatures, crosswinds and desert dust.
At the heart of the Yangwang U9 Xtreme is a 1,200-volt high-voltage architecture, supported by four independent electric motors capable of spinning at up to 30,000 rpm.
The four-motor powertrain produces a combined output of more than 3,000 PS, while the vehicle's power output is rated at 2,220 kW. Its advanced torque-vectoring system can adjust power distribution more than 100 times per second to improve traction and handling.
BYD has also upgraded the vehicle's tyres, braking systems, cooling architecture and body-control technology to withstand the demands of ultra-high-speed driving.
The hypercar's performance credentials extend beyond straight-line speed. In August 2025, it completed the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit in 6 minutes and 59.157 seconds, setting a production electric vehicle lap record at the demanding German circuit.
Its aerodynamic package includes a carbon-fibre front splitter, rear diffuser, dual-channel bonnet and a prominent swan-neck rear wing. The sophisticated torque-vectoring system continuously adjusts power at individual wheels to improve stability and cornering performance.

Despite its record-breaking performance, the Yangwang U9 Xtreme will remain an exclusive offering. BYD has confirmed that global production will be limited to no more than 30 units.
The first production-standard U9 Xtreme has been unveiled, and some customers have already approved their customised specifications and moved towards contract signing and production scheduling.
The record represents a major statement of intent from BYD, a company increasingly looking beyond mass-market electric vehicles to establish itself in the world's most exclusive performance-car segment.
