Dighi Port is set to handle about 200,000 vehicles a year after Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ) and Motherson agreed to set up a dedicated automobile export facility at the Maharashtra port.

The project positions Dighi Port as an export terminal for manufacturers across the Mumbai–Pune belt and supports rising automotive trade under the Make in India programme. The port, one of APSEZ's 15 strategic locations, will expand its role in vehicle import and export as India's auto sector scales up.

The agreement is a joint venture between Samvardhana Motherson Hamakyorex Engineered Logistics, which will build and operate the new facility with Dighi Port Limited, an APSEZ subsidiary.

Ashwani Gupta, CEO and whole-time director at Adani Ports and SEZ, said the partnership with Motherson ā€œmarks a significant step toward redefining automotive logistics in Indiaā€. He said the planned roll-on roll-off (RoRo) terminal will support trade, improve supply chain efficiency and create long-term value for customers and communities.

Laksh Vaaman Sehgal, vice chairman of Motherson Group, said the collaboration will help the company expand its logistics offerings. He said the RoRo terminal will become a strategic asset for automotive clients by improving efficiency and lowering logistics costs.

New Terminal Plan

The RoRo terminal will handle end-to-end finished vehicle logistics for major manufacturers. SAMRX will invest in the facility to integrate its services and offer full cargo visibility.

The planned services include single-window operations covering yard management, pre-delivery inspection, charging, storage and vessel loading. The company will introduce AI-based yard systems for real-time tracking and lower dwell times. The terminal will link to the Mumbai–Pune auto belt through National Highway 66 and will use a 1.3-kilometre RoRo-ready jetty designed for all-weather operations. The site will also support electric vehicle exports and provide OEM dashboards for planning and volume tracking.

Port Positioning

Dighi Port sits on the west coast and serves industrial corridors in Maharashtra. It offers warehouses, tank farms and stockyards, with berths that handle oil, chemical, container and bulk cargo. The RoRo expansion aligns with APSEZ's plan to build integrated logistics hubs across its network.

APSEZ said the development strengthens its national presence and highlights its focus on port infrastructure, sustainable growth and trade connectivity for domestic and global partners.
