Canada's Auditor General Michael Ferguson Dies of Cancer

(Bloomberg) -- Canada's Auditor General Michael Ferguson has died from cancer, according to a statement from his office.

Ferguson was appointed auditor general in 2011. Prior to that, he served various roles in the New Brunswick provincial government, including comptroller, auditor general and deputy minister of finance.

“Over the past seven years, Mike has led our organization with compassion for everyone, and he was convinced of the great value of this office's work,” Sylvain Ricard, assistant auditor general, and Andrew Hayes, senior general counsel, said in a statement tweeted by CTV. “His impact on us all, and his service to Canadians, will be felt for many years to come.”

Ferguson was lauded for being tough but fair in his semi-annual reports to the federal government. Most recently, he had been critical of the condition of Canada's fleet of fighter jets and the military's handling of inappropriate sexual behavior.
