(Bloomberg) -- Fighters, suspected to be from the Islamist militant group Boko Haram, killed 11 people in an attack on a camp for internally displaced persons in the northern Nigerian border town of Banki near the border with Cameroon, a vigilante group said.
The militants used knives in the attack on the camp, which is situated about 130 kilometers (81 miles) from Borno's capital, Maiduguri, on Thursday night, Abdu Salihu, a member of the vigilante group the Civilian Joint Task Force in the border town, said by phone on Saturday.
Soldiers near the camp were alerted and confronted the attackers. “The fighters fled the camp after they saw soldiers approaching,” said Salisu Balami, another vigilante in the region.
President Muhammadu Buhari vowed last week to step up the fight against the group, which has waged an eight-year war to impose its version of Islamic law in Africa's most populous country, leaving tens of thousands of people dead and forcing millions to flee.
