In a landmark move for the Australian Defense Force, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Monday the appointment of Lieutenant General Susan Coyle as the next Chief of Army, marking the first time a woman will lead the service branch in its 125-year history.
She is set to succeed the outgoing Lieutenant General Simon Stuart, who has led the service since July 2022.

Lieutenant General Susan Coyle was born on May 21, 1970, in Kyogle, a small town in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. She is a distinguished graduate of the prestigious US Army War College.
Lt Gen Coyle's rise to the top of the military hierarchy is backed by nearly four decades of service and a highly distinguished resume. She began her military career in 1987, influenced by her sister, Alice, who served in the Royal Australian Corps of Signals as an Army Reservist during the 1980s. This familial connection sparked Susan's interest in a military career, leading her to follow in those footsteps, according to media reports.
She is a mother of three whose husband is also a serving member of the Australian military.
Career, Accomplishments
Lt Gen Coyle has a formidable operational record, having served in East Timor, the Solomon Islands, and Afghanistan, as per media reports. Notably, she was the first woman to command Joint Task Force 633 in the Middle East, overseeing all Australian personnel deployed across the region.
Currently serving as the Chief of Joint Capabilities, a role she has held since July 2024, Coyle oversees the ADF's most advanced fields, including Cyber and Space Commands and Information Warfare.
