US President Donald Trump, through a post on social media platform Truth Social, reiterated his call for control over Greenland citing national security. He said that gaining control of the island is "vital" for the "golden dome" that America is building.
"The United States needs Greenland for the purpose of National Security. It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building. NATO should be leading the way for us to get it," he tweeted.
Trump emphasised that if America does not do it, Russia and China will get cotrol of Greenland.
"IF WE DON'T, RUSSIA OR CHINA WILL, AND THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! Militarily, without the vast power of the United States, much of which I built during my first term, and am now bringing to a new and even higher level, NATO would not be an effective force or deterrent - Not even close! They know that, and so do I (sic)," the US President outlined.
He further claimed that NATO will become a far more formidable force if Greenland comes under Washington, and that anything else than this is "unacceptable".
"NATO becomes far more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the UNITED STATES.
Anything less than that is unacceptable. Thank you for your attention to this matter."
Greenland is a semi-autonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark and has been at the centre of geopolitical friction involving the United States.
Trump has pushed for its ownership time and again while residents of its capital, Nuuk, say it isn't for sale. The White House has not dismissed the possibility of acquiring the Arctic island by force.
Vice President JD Vance is set to meet Denmark's foreign minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and his Greenlandic counterpart Vivian Motzfeldt to address the issue later on Wednesday, as per reports.
