As drone and missile assaults continue near the Black Sea port, a seafarers' union is pleading with the Centre to ensure their immediate evacuation. Thirteen Indian seafarers are among the 15 crew members stranded aboard the cargo vessel MV AMIR1 at Ukraine's Chornomorsk port.
The Forward Seaman Union of India (FSUI) called the situation "terrible and life-threatening" in a post on X, stating that the crew is constantly in danger of being attacked while the ship is stuck in the combat zone.
"Urgent Appeal | M.V. AMIR1, currently at Ukrainian port Chornomorsk with 15 crew on board, including 13 Indian seafarers, is trapped in a terrible and life-threatening situation," FSUI posted.
"The crew is living under constant fear of a direct hit at any moment," the FSUI stated, pleading with the Indian government, shipowners, the flag state of the ship, and other authorities to guarantee the safety of the seafarers and enable their prompt evacuation and return.
In order to highlight the ordeal and unstable security situation at the port, the union also released a video that was allegedly taken from the ship and showed large plumes of smoke billowing in the area around the ship.

The union warned that Indian sailors should not be left exposed in an area of ongoing warfare since the risk to their lives was growing every day.
Concerns about the safety of Indian merchant mariners operating in the Black Sea region are growing, as seen by the most recent distress call.
Last week, the FSUI claimed that the ship, Disha, was also struck by an unidentified missile close to the Strait of Hormuz while travelling to the Persian Gulf. No one was hurt in that incident.
Four Indian nationals were on board the commercial ship MV AGN RAGNAR when it was attacked at the port of Odesa in Ukraine last week. Two were saved, but two are still unaccounted for, and search efforts are ongoing.
