Indonesia will ban social media for children under 16, Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid said Friday, reported AP.
Hafid in a statement to media said that she just signed a government regulation.
According to regulation, children under the age of 16 can no longer have accounts on high-risk digital platforms, including YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, Bigo Live and Roblox.
In December, Australia became the world's first country to ban social media for children under 16, blocking them from platforms including TikTok.
Ministers in Sweden's government are also considering imposing age limits on social media platforms.
Last year, speaking to Reuters, Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer said that they are not ruling out anything and would examine measures taken by other countries and see what was best for Sweden.
Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has also announced that usage of social media will be banned for children under the age of 16 and strict action will be taken to prevent drug abuse in schools, colleges and universities.
"With the objective of preventing adverse effects of increasing mobile usage on children, usage of social media will be banned for children under the age of 16," Siddaramaiah said while presenting the state budget for 2026-27.
