India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri will participate in high-level talks convened by the United Kingdom to explore options for reopening the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday.

The talks aim to explore diplomatic and economic measures to restore operations along the key maritime corridor linking the Persian Gulf with global markets, which has recently experienced disruptions.

Responding to queries during the weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that New Delhi will be represented by the Foreign Secretary at the discussions.

Jaiswal said, “The UK side has invited several countries, including India, for talks on the Strait of Hormuz. From our side, the Foreign Secretary is attending the meeting this evening.”

He further added, “We are in touch with Iran and other countries in the region to ensure unimpeded and safe transit for our ships carrying products such as LPG, LNG, and other goods. Through our engagements over the past several days, six Indian ships have been able to safely cross the Strait of Hormuz, and we remain in contact with relevant parties.”

The initiative shows the importance of dialogue and de-escalation, while highlighting concerns over energy security and the impact of the ongoing conflict on global supply chains.

The UK has brought together 35 countries, excluding the United States, as part of a coordinated effort to address the ongoing blockade of the Strait, which has been attributed to Iran.

The development comes amid escalating tensions in West Asia, with both Washington and Tehran seeking strategic leverage.

The continued disruption of the waterway—a vital artery for global oil and gas shipments—has significantly affected energy supplies and trade flows, raising concerns about the broader global economic outlook.

According to official statements, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the next phase of joint diplomatic efforts by the UK and France to secure safe passage would be taken up on Thursday.

The talks are expected to involve senior leaders, including UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, along with international counterparts.
