Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair, mother of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, has been named in the latest tranche of documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, reported NDTV.
The documents which are comprising over three million pages, 2,000 videos and 1,80,000 images, include a 2009 email referencing Nair's presence at an afterparty hosted by Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell in New York.
According to the email sent by publicist Peggy Siegal on Oct 21, 2009, the gathering took place following a screening of Nair's biographical drama Amelia. The message notes that several high-profile individuals attended the event, including former U.S. President Bill Clinton and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Siegal described having “just left Ghislaine's townhouse” and mentioned “director Mira Nair…etc.” among the attendees.
The email also offered a candid account of the guests' response to the film, describing it as 'tepid,' though reportedly better received by women. "Film received tepid reaction although women like it much more...Hillary Swank and Gen: at stupid party in Bloomingdales cheap sportwear department....very weird. Studio went for free party from store and windows for a month. Going to be in Wall Street 2 tomorrow ....more to come. xoxo Peg," the email read, as reported by NDTV.
Nair's name appears solely in the context of attending the afterparty, with no allegations of wrongdoing linked to her.
New Epstein Files Released
The US' Justice Department on Friday has released many more records from its investigative files on Epstein, resuming disclosures under a law intended to reveal what the government knew about the millionaire financier's sexual abuse of young girls and his interactions with rich and powerful people in the power.
The files, posted to the department's website on Friday, include some of the several million pages of records that officials said were withheld from an initial release in December. Some documents that were included were related to some of Epstein's famous associates, including Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Britain's Prince Andrew, and email correspondence between Epstein and Elon Musk and other prominent contacts from across the political spectrum.
The documents were disclosed under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, the law enacted after months of public and political pressure that requires the government to open its files on the late financier and his confidant and onetime girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell.
