Google is expanding digital ID capabilities both in India and across the globe. In India, Google Wallet has now started supporting Aadhaar Verifiable Credentials. Through its partnership with UIDAI, Indian users can now securely save their Aadhaar Verifiable Credentials directly in Google Wallet on their smartphone. The feature provides a convenient, secure, and digital-first way to prove identity for various everyday services. Digital IDs further offer an alternative to carrying physical documents and presenting them whenever needed without having to rummage through a wallet.

Google has initially partnered with several companies, and credentials can be easily verified when their services are used. Initial partners include: PVR INOX, where users can quickly verify their age to buy movie tickets and unlock rewards; BharatMatrimony, which allows people to create verified Prime profiles for matchmaking; Atlys, enabling users to auto-fill international visa applications; Mygate, which will soon let residents securely verify delivery and service staff entering their communities; and Snabbit, allowing background checks for service providers.

Google said it is building the digital ID solutions based on global standards and incorporating advanced privacy protections such as selective disclosure, which ensures that only the necessary pieces of information are shared when required.

The company added that “security, privacy, and interoperability are at the foundation of our approach to digital identity, and are built into every layer of this integration.”

In addition to India, Google is expanding digital ID features to other countries. Users in Singapore, Taiwan, and Brazil can now create a secure digital ID pass using their passport information and store it directly in Google Wallet. This provides a simple and private way to verify identity or age for both in-person and online services, such as signing into accounts when required.
