WhatsApp users can now recharge their prepaid mobile data and voice call plans for Jio, Airtel and Vi through the app itself, according to reports on Thursday.

The features will be rolled out in a series of phases for iOS and Android users in India in the weeks to come, they will facilitate the browsing and selection of various recharge plans within WhatsApp's application.

The service will be powered by PayU, a fintech company and payment gateway provider, that specialises in integrating digital payment services with websites and applications.

Meta told Business Standard that this feature was developed to enable seamless payment transactions for users without having to divide their attention between different applications. "By bringing recharges directly into WhatsApp, we are making it easier for people to stay connected without having to juggle between multiple apps," said Ravi Garg the director of business messaging, Meta India told the publication.

To access the feature, users need to open the application and then click on the rupee symbol, present on the top right hand side of the app next to the camera and settings icons.

They then must click on the 'Mobile Recharge' option underneath the 'Send Money' option. They will then be shown all the phone numbers they have connected to WhatsApp to choose which one to recharge, After which, the app will display a list of recharge plans for users to choose from.

On selecting the plan of their choice, WhatsApp will display a bill displaying and summarising the cost breakup for the plan and the final that will be paid. Users can then click on 'Continue' and select their preferred payment options to conclude the transaction.

Meta is expanding its offerings on the instant messaging app, having introduced a digital payments system in November 202, for users to carry out UPI payments without leaving WhatsApp.
