WhatsApp is rolling out a fascinating new feature that allows users to chat, call and connect with others without sharing their phone numbers. Under this, individuals are required to generate usernames.

Currently available to a limited number of users, the latest feature remains compatible with both Android and iOS platforms. This is aimed at improving privacy while keeping intact the platform's simple and convenient communication experience.

WhatsApp Testing 'Usernames'

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is bringing the username functionality to chats. This will allow users to communicate without sharing their phone numbers, providing them more control over their privacy.

People will be able to search for contacts using only their usernames, thus making it simple to connect in a secure way.

As per the report, the platform has worked around to ensure that the "username experience is stable and secure". Due to this, its rollout has taken a significant amount of time.

How To Check It Out?

As of now, WhatsApp is testing usernames with a "very limited number of users," WABetaInfo states.

To check whether you are a part of it or not, you have to open the profile settings. Those who have access will see a dedicated option for usernames. If available, users can tap on it to start creating their unique username.

A step-by-step process is available to make it simple and intuitive. Once the desired username is selected, it gets linked to the account.

Later on, the person will be able to share the username with others, instead of a phone number.

Rules, Requirements

A clear set of rules has been defined by WhatsApp while opting for a username. Among these include:

  • Usernames cannot begin with "www." as this would make others believe that they might be interacting with an official website. Also, usernames cannot end with a domain, such as ".com" or ".net".
  • Usernames must include at least one letter. This prevents usernames containing only numbers or symbols.
  • Only a certain set of characters are allowed. Among these are lowercase letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), and underscores.
  • Users have to use between 3 and 35 characters for their username.
