Javier Mascherano resigned as Inter Miami head coach on Tuesday, April 14, in a decision that has surprised many in the MLS due to the timing of his departure, coming barely four months after leading the club to their maiden league triumph.
The Argentine has cited “personal reasons” in his resignation, echoing the same reason used by his predecessor Gerardo “Tata” Martino in late 2024.
Inter Miami have begun the 2026 MLS season with 3 wins, 3 draws and 1 defeat, however a Round-of-16 exit from the CONCACAF Champions Cup and a visible dip in defensive consistency are understood to have accelerated Mascherano's decision.
The club have turned to sporting director Guillermo Hoyos, a long-time mentor to Messi, to take over managerial duties in the interim.
A Short, Successful Era Ends
Mascherano leaves as the most successful coach in Inter Miami's brief history. Across 67 matches, he recorded 38 wins and a win rate of 56.7%, an identical record as Gerardo Martino. However, what sets Mascherno apart is the fact that he delivered the franchise's first MLS Cup title in 2025.
His tenure was defined by control and structure, a shift from Martino's more expansive system.

Mascherano prioritised balance, often toggling between a 4-4-2 and a 3-4-3 to accommodate a veteran core featuring Messi, Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. Crucially, the system maximised Messi's attacking output, giving him absolute freedom in the final third.
The 2025 campaign remains the defining chapter of Mascherano's spell. Inter Miami transitioned from a high-profile prospect into a fully realised title-winning side, dominating key stretches of the season before peaking in the playoffs.
They capped the campaign with a 3-1 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS Cup final, a landmark result that secured the club's first league title. For a franchise founded only in 2018 and debuting in MLS in 2020, it marked a rapid ascent to the top tier of North American football.
Inter Miami's Brief Coaching History
Inter Miami's journey has been compressed but eventful. After early struggles under Diego Alonso and a longer rebuilding phase with Phil Neville, the club's trajectory shifted dramatically with the arrival of Messi and former Barcelona teammates in 2023.
Martino stabilised the side and delivered the 2023 Leagues Cup and 2024 Supporters' Shield, but it was Mascherano who transformed them into a championship-winning unit.
Inter Miami have had four permanent head coaches since entering MLS, reflecting both the club's rapid evolution and its shifting ambitions.
Here's a look at where he stands on the list of Inter Miami managers so far:
| Coach | Matches | Wins | Draws | Losses | Win% |
| Javier Mascherano | 67 | 38 | 15 | 14 | 56.7 |
| Gerardo Martino | 67 | 38 | 13 | 16 | 56.7 |
| Phil Neville | 90 | 36 | 11 | 43 | 40 |
| Diego Alonso | 24 | 7 | 3 | 14 | 29.2 |
