Rising star of Indian badminton Ayush Shetty continued his remarkable run in the ongoing Badminton Asia Championship 2026 as he beat world No.4 Jonatan Christie in the men's singles quarterfinals match on Friday.

Twenty-year-old Shetty beat Christie 23-21, 21-17 to storm into the semi-finals, assuring India of a medal.

The victory comes days after Shetty, ranked 25 in the world, defeated world No. 7 and fifth seed Li Shi Feng 21-13, 21-16.

Shetty's win infuses hopes in India's campaign at the tournament which has otherwise been blighted with withdrawal and early exits. Ahead of the tournament, the men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty was forced to withdraw after Satwik suffered an injury. This was followed by stalwarts like PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen, HS Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth all bowing out after defeats.

Shetty has delivered several impressive performances in recent years. In 2023, he captured a bronze medal at the World Junior Championships along with silver medals at the Odisha Masters and the Bahrain International. The following year, he added another silver to his tally at the Dutch Open. Most recently, he struck gold at the US Open, marking one of the biggest wins of his career.
