Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra won India's first-ever athletics gold medal, with a best throw of 87.58 metres on his second attempt holding all the way through the finals.

This was also India's first gold in the Tokyo Olympics.

Two Czechs, Jakub Vadlejch with 86.67 metres and Vitezslav Vesely with 85.44 metres won silver and bronze respectively.
