(Bloomberg) -- A hacker bombarded an online South African parliamentary committee meeting with pornographic images and hurled racial and sexual abuse at Speaker Thandi Modise, prompting the legislature to reassess how it controls access to its proceedings.
The Cape Town-based parliament is still adapting to holding more meetings remotely during a lockdown to control the spread of the coronavirus, and has encountered several pitfalls in the process, its spokesman Moloto Mothapo said by phone.
“The incident on Thursday is deplorable, but not unique to the South African parliament,” he said. “Plans are being drawn up to increase security of these meetings using online technology without compromising the openness and transparency of parliamentary committees.”
