Injuries Reported at Japanese Ski Resort After Volcano Eruption

(Bloomberg) -- About 15 people were reported injured following a volcanic eruption and an avalanche at a ski resort north of Tokyo, national broadcaster NHK reported Tuesday. One person was said to be missing.

Japan's Meteorological Agency raised the volcano alert level for Mt. Kusatsu-Shirane in Gunma Prefecture to level 3 on a scale of 5. This means restrictions are in place on entering the area around the mountain.

The agency detected activity by the volcano around 10 a.m. local time, NHK said. Injuries were reported after ski lifts were hit by debris, the broadcaster said, citing local fire department officials.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said the government was gathering information on the situation.
