Saving ‘Rs 1 Lakh A Month’ Without ‘Living Horribly’: Bengaluru Woman’s Viral Post Sparks Debate

A 23-year-old woman from Bengaluru has shared a breakdown of her monthly finances on Reddit, attracting a lot of attention to her spending habits. Taking to the personal finance community on the platform, the woman said that she spends roughly Rs 70,000 a month, while still being able to save about Rs 1 lakh.
Detailing her long list of spending habits, the woman said in the Reddit post, shared last week, “I know I can do better, but I really don’t want to live horribly in my youth, to save money.”
According to the woman’s claims, she works remotely and does not smoke or drink. Her monthly expenses include rent (Rs 27,000 for a 1BHK flat), subscriptions (Rs 199 for Netflix; Rs 2,000 for Claude Pro), living expenses (Rs 15,000 for food, Rs 10,000 for dining out), utilities (Rs 499 for water, Rs 700 for electricity), and gifting her parents about Rs 10,000 each month.
She further said that her expenses roughly come to Rs 70,000 and she can save about Rs 1 lakh. She pointed out that while she doesn't engage in partying, drinking, or smoking, she loves spending on good food and her parents.
As her post gained traction, many people were impressed by the woman's ability to land such a high salary package at the age of just 23.
“If you are making 1.7 lakh at 23, please feel free to roast us,” a comment read.
She mentioned that she switched multiple jobs in her career, which helped her secure her current salary. She also clarified that she didn’t attend any IIT, but rather a VIT-equivalent institute.
In response to her post, some users recommended that she re-evaluate her saving habits. They particularly emphasised an equity and gold mix strategic investment to build wealth in the long run.
“You don't have to be perfect financially. Find your balance and be consistent with it for the long term,” a comment read.
When asked why she doesn't stay in her hometown despite having a remote job, the woman emphasised that she enjoys living in Bengaluru. Originally from Ranchi, Jharkhand, she shared that she enjoys the city’s lifestyle and has also invited her parents over to spend time with them.
