July was an eventful month for India. And not just because it was the first month of country's new Goods and Services Tax regime. India got a new president. Bihar got a new chief minister...but not really. Mukesh Ambani launched the “free” JioPhone, and a some much-anticipated mergers were called off. The Nifty50, on the other hand, moved past the 10,000 level for the first time ever and closed at an all-time high on the last day of the month.

Here are five interesting charts about markets in July.

Best Monthly Gain For Sensex In Over A Year

India's benchmark BSE Sensex witnessed its best monthly performance in July in more than a year. Sensex rose 5.15 percent in July, its highest monthly gain since March last year when it had run up more than 10 percent.

Cash Volumes Most Since June 2009

The volume of trade in cash markets reached its highest level since June 2009, according to a research report by Morgan Stanley.

Bullish Signals?

At the end of July, 82 percent of Indian stocks were trading above their 200-day moving average, compared to 74 percent in June, the Morgan Stanley report said.

The moving average of a stock typically acts as a support level for it.

The Best And The Worst Sectors

Energy and financials were the best-performing sectors, according to Morgan Stanley. The worst performing were healthcare, which incidentally was the best performing sector just a month ago.

Derivative Turnover Hits New Peak

Monthly turnover from the derivatives segment, which rose 6.6 percent sequentially in July rose to a record high of $1,891 billion, according to the report.
