Stock Market Live Blog, September 25, 2026
1 day ago

Stock Market Live Today, September 25, 2026: The Nifty 50 settled at 23,140, up 0.34%, while the Sensex ended at 73,895, up 0.43%. The Nifty Bank gained 141 points to 55,580, while the Nifty Midcap 150 gained 15 points to settle at 22,470.

Gains in Nifty were led by Axis Bank and Asian Paints, which rose 3% and 2%, respectively. Broad-based indices underperformed the benchmark, with the Nifty Midcap 150 declining 0.15%, marking its second consecutive session of losses. Fortis Healthcare and JK Cement were the top losers, falling 4.5% and 3.5%, respectively.

The Nifty Smallcap 250 closed flat with a positive bias, with Whirlpool India gaining 7.6%, while Ola Electric fell 9.5%.

Among sectors, all indices closed higher except Nifty IT and Nifty Pharma. Nifty Realty was the top-performing sector, led by DLF and Godrej Properties, both of which gained over 1.7%. Nifty IT was the worst-performing sector, dragged by OFSS and Infosys, which fell over 1.4% each. Nifty Pharma declined for the second consecutive session.

Despite this, Nifty fell nearly 1% this week, extending its losing streak to seven consecutive weeks. The index also touched its lowest level since April 2026 during the week. Trent and Bharti Airtel were the top Nifty losers, both declining over 5.5%.

Broader markets also remained under pressure. The Nifty Midcap 150 fell over 2%, with PB Fintech emerging as the biggest loser, down more than 33%. The Nifty Smallcap 250 declined over 0.5%, extending its losing streak to four weeks, while Home First Finance fell over 10%.

Among sectors, Nifty IT was the biggest laggard, falling nearly 2.5% and ending in the red for the fourth consecutive week. OFSS was the top loser, down nearly 10%. In contrast, Nifty Realty gained over 2.7%, snapping a four-week losing streak, led by DLF, which rose over 5.5%.

Global cues also remained weak to mixed. Asian markets were trading mixed in early trade, with investors keeping a close watch on developments around the Trump-Xi meeting, the ongoing US-Iran conflict, elevated oil prices and the global bond selloff.

Japan's Nikkei 225 was up 0.48%, while the broader Topix gained 0.58%. Australia's S&P/ASX 200, however, declined 0.50%. Markets in China and South Korea remained closed for a holiday.

Asian equities entered the final trading session of the week amid continued uncertainty over the Middle East, surging energy prices and rising global bond yields. Investors are also assessing the implications of higher-for-longer interest rates as Treasury yields continue to climb.

US equity futures were little changed on Thursday evening. S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq-100 futures were each down 0.1%, while Dow Jones Industrial Average futures fell 59 points, or 0.1%. In Thursday's regular session, the S&P 500 ended 0.02% lower, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.01%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.31%.

The bond market remained under pressure, with the 10-year US Treasury yield climbing to 5.225% late Thursday, its highest level since 2007. The 30-year Treasury yield also rose to 5.502%.

The rise in yields was driven by hawkish comments from Federal Reserve Governor Michael Barr, persistently elevated energy prices amid the Iran war and a stronger purchasing managers' report. Fed funds futures indicated a roughly 68% probability of a rate hike in October, according to the CME FedWatch tool.

Higher Treasury yields have also pushed up borrowing costs. The 30-year fixed mortgage rate, which tracks the 10-year Treasury yield, rose to 7.45%, its highest level since 2024.

Meanwhile, oil prices remained elevated despite a modest pullback. Brent crude oil was down 0.93% at $106.04 a barrel at last check, keeping crude prices, inflation and the impact on India's import bill firmly in focus ahead of the market opening.
