What Is Muhurat Trading?
As per Hindu culture, Muhurat is the time when it is auspicious to start or do something good. On Diwali, investors and traders in India come together to invest or trade in the securities market during the one-hour Muhurat trading session.
Since Diwali signifies the beginning of Samvat- the new year as per the Hindu calendar, investing during the Muhurat trading session is auspicious. It is believed that investments made during the Muhurat will yield good returns in the future. Though the Indian stock exchanges remain closed on Diwali, they are open for trading only for an hour on that day for the Muhurat trading session.

History Of Muhurat Trading
During Diwali, businesses, investors and traders close their previous year's balance sheets, open new books of accounts, and pray to Goddess Lakshmi for success, wealth, and prosperity. Keeping up with this tradition, in 1957, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) started the practice of holding the Muhurat trading session, and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) followed suit in 1992.
Date And Timings Of Muhurat Trading 2022
This year, the stock markets will conduct the Muhurat trading session on Diwali, i.e., October 24, 2022. Here are the details of the session:
According to the notice released by the BSE and NSE, the Muhurat trading session for the equity and equity derivative segment will start at 6:15 pm and will end at 7:15 pm. The pre-opening session will be held between 6:00 pm and 6:08 pm. The matching timings will start at 6:08 pm and end at 6:15 pm. Trade modification in the call auction will end at 7:45 pm. All trades executed during the Muhurat trading session will result in settlement obligations.
In the commodities segment, the Muhurat trading session will start at 6:15 pm on October 24, 2022, and end at 7:15 pm. However, trade modification of call auction in this segment will be allowed only till 7:25 pm.
In the currency derivatives segment, the Muhurat trading session will be open from 6:15 pm- 7:15 pm on October 24, 2022. Here, trade modification and IRD will be possible till 7:25 pm. Trade annulment requests in this segment can be placed till 7:30 pm.
