(Bloomberg) -- Business Wire, the press-release service owned by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc., has been working to mitigate a cyberattack that's caused slowness on its systems for almost a week.
The company has suffered a distributed denial-of-service attack starting on Jan. 31, according to spokesman Neil Hershberg. Such efforts are malicious attempts to flood a computer system with traffic to force shutdowns or slowdowns. Business Wire has hired experts to help resolve the problem and has been working with clients to issue their news releases, Hershberg said.
“There's no evidence of any information being compromised,” he said. “It's really an issue of slowness.”
It's not the first time Business Wire has been attacked. In 2015, U.S. authorities arrested several men who allegedly infiltrated computer systems of several press-release services to gather sensitive corporate information like earnings, then made millions of dollars trading on the confidential data. Business Wire said at the time it was cooperating with authorities and hired a cybersecurity firm to investigate the breach.
The Wall Street Journal reported the attack earlier on Tuesday.
