Eric Dane, the American actor who turned the role of Dr. Mark Sloan into one of television's most recognisable characters, has died at the age of 53 after battling Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig's Disease. His family confirmed that he passed away on Thursday, surrounded by his wife, daughters and close friends, after what they described as a courageous fight against the progressive neurological disease.
Early Life And First Steps In Acting
Born on November 9, 1972, in San Francisco, Dane discovered acting in high school and moved to Los Angeles to pursue it professionally. His early years were shaped by guest appearances on popular shows such as Saved by the Bell, The Wonder Years, Roseanne and Married… with Children, before he began landing more substantial roles in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The Role That Made Him 'McSteamy'
His career changed dramatically in 2006 when he entered Grey's Anatomy. Introduced as Dr Mark Sloan, he quickly became one of the show's most talked-about characters, where he appeared in nearly 139 episodes. Nicknamed “McSteamy” by fans, the role transformed Dane into an international star and remained a defining part of his identity long after his exit in 2012.
He later headlined TNT's The Last Ship, proving his ability to carry a series as a leading man, and went on to impress audiences again as Cal Jacobs in HBO's Euphoria, where he embraced a far more complex and unsettling character.
Eric Dane's Film Work
Alongside television, Dane appeared in films including X-Men: The Last Stand, Marley & Me, Burlesque and Bad Boys: Ride or Die. His final screen appearances included the 2025 series Countdown and a guest role in Brilliant Minds, where he portrayed a character living with ALS — a part that closely reflected his real-life condition.
Eric Dane's Battle With ALS And Advocacy
Dane publicly revealed his diagnosis in 2025. As his health declined, he became a vocal supporter of ALS awareness and research, joining organisations working toward better treatment and a cure. Even as the disease affected his mobility, he continued to speak about hope, treatment advancements and the importance of community for those facing similar battles.
Family And Legacy
He married actress Rebecca Gayheart in 2004, and though the couple faced ups and downs, they remained deeply connected and reunited in the years before his death. He is survived by Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia, whom he often described as the centre of his world.
Remembered for his striking screen presence, emotional range and openness in the face of illness, Eric Dane leaves behind a body of work that spans decades.
