Colonel Sonam Wangchuk (Retd.), the decorated Kargil War hero known as the “Lion of Ladakh,” passed away following a heart attack in Leh on Friday. He was 61.
A Maha Vir Chakra awardee and one of the most respected faces of the 1999 Kargil War, Col Wangchuk's death marks the end of an era defined by courage, high-altitude warfare excellence and quiet leadership.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed grief, remembering him as a “highly decorated officer” who exemplified gallantry and unwavering commitment to duty.
“Deeply saddened by the passing of Colonel Sonam Wangchuk. He was a highly decorated officer of the Indian Army, renowned for his gallantry, resolute leadership and unwavering commitment to duty,” Mr Singh said in a post on X.
Calling him a “proud son of Ladakh,” the minister added:
“He exemplified the spirit of the region - resilient, steadfast and deeply rooted in service to the Nation… His life remains a testament to courage, sacrifice and national integration, and his legacy will continue to inspire coming generations.”
The Indian Army also paid tribute. In a post on X, the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADGPI) said:
“General Upendra Dwivedi, COAS and All Ranks of the Indian Army pay heartfelt homage to Colonel Sonam Wangchuk, MVC - a brave soldier, a committed leader and a son of Ladakh whose life embodied courage, service and unity. His legacy will continue to inspire generations.”

Widely known as the “Lion of Ladakh,” Colonel Sonam Wangchuk, remains one of the most inspiring figures to emerge from the Kargil War.
Born on May 11, 1964, in Sankar near Leh, his journey from the rugged landscapes of Ladakh to the frontlines of one of India's toughest battles reflects grit, discipline and deep-rooted patriotism.
Early life shaped by Ladakh's ethos
Raised in a culturally rich and spiritually grounded Ladakhi family, Wangchuk grew up influenced by Buddhist teachings and discipline.
His father's association with Dalai Lama and familial links to prominent figures like Kushok Bakula Rinpoche helped shape his calm temperament and respect for nature.
His schooling took him from Himachal Pradesh to Delhi, where he graduated in history from University of Delhi.
Despite expectations of a civil services career, he chose the armed forces, inspired by a family legacy of military service.
A distinguished military career
Commissioned into the Indian Army in 1987, Wangchuk served in challenging terrains ranging from Northeast India to Sri Lanka with the Indian Peace Keeping Force.
He later joined the elite Ladakh Scouts, a unit renowned for its expertise in high-altitude warfare.
Over three decades, he earned multiple service and campaign medals, reflecting sustained operational excellence in some of the harshest environments on earth.
Turning point: Kargil War
Wangchuk's defining moment came during the Kargil conflict in 1999. Then a Major, he led a Ladakh Scouts column in the Batalik sector, tasked with securing the strategic Chorbat La ridge at nearly 18,000 feet.
Facing a heavily armed and numerically superior enemy, his team was ambushed. Despite casualties and extreme weather conditions, Wangchuk regrouped his men, executed a flanking manoeuvre and launched a surprise counter-attack.
The operation resulted in significant enemy losses and forced a retreat, marking one of India's earliest tactical successes in the conflict.
For his exceptional bravery under fire, he was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, cementing his place among India's decorated war heroes.
Life after uniform
After retiring in 2018, Wangchuk chose a low-profile life focused on mentoring youth, supporting veterans and advocating for Ladakh's fragile ecology.
His story reached wider audiences through the documentary The Lion of Ladakh, which chronicles his military journey and personal life.
He continues to inspire young officers through talks and interactions, often reflecting on leadership, resilience and the importance of mental strength in extreme conditions.
