Indian-American scientist Amit Kshatriya has emerged as a key figure behind NASA's Artemis II mission, the Moon programme that has drawn global attention for pushing human spaceflight farther from Earth than previous launches. He now serves as NASA's highest-ranking civil servant and senior adviser to the administrator.

His rise has sparked interest not only in the Artemis II mission but also in the career path that took him from a childhood near Houston's space hub to one of the top roles at NASA. His journey reflects decades of work across engineering, mission control and programme leadership.

Artemis II marked NASA's return to a Moon mission with humans after more than 50 years. The mission set a record by taking humans about 252,760 miles from Earth, placing fresh focus on the team leading the programme.

Early Years

Kshatriya grew up near Houston, home to NASA's Johnson Space Center, where he spent his early years watching rockets cross the Texas sky, according to PTI. That early exposure shaped his path into space exploration.

He is a native of Brookfield, Wisconsin, and calls Katy, Texas, his hometown. He is the son of first-generation Indian immigrants to the United States.

Career Path

Kshatriya joined NASA in 2003 and has since held several technical and leadership roles linked to human spaceflight. He began as a software engineer, robotics engineer and spacecraft operator, mainly supporting International Space Station operations.

Between 2014 and 2017, he served as a space station flight director, leading international teams during missions. He was later deputy manager and acting manager of the ISS Vehicle Office from 2017 to 2021, overseeing engineering, logistics and hardware operations.

In 2021, he moved to NASA Headquarters as assistant deputy associate administrator for ESDMD. He later took senior roles in the Moon-to-Mars Programme, where he oversaw Artemis and Mars planning, integration and risk management, and contributed to the Artemis I mission.

Awards, Family

Kshatriya received the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal for his role as lead flight director during the 50th expedition to the International Space Station. He is also a recipient of the Silver Snoopy Award.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the California Institute of Technology and a Master of Arts in Mathematics from The University of Texas at Austin. He and his wife have three children.
