The coalition's seat arithmetic now stands as follows: TVK with 108 (107), Congress with 5, CPI and CPI(M) with 2 seats each. VCK's 2 seats pushed the count to exactly 118, and IUML's 2 seats have now taken the overall tally to 120.

In two significant developments on Saturday, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) submitted separate letters of unconditional support to the Tamil Nadu Governor, formally backing Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam's (TVK) bid to form the government — pushing actor-politician Vijay to exactly the 118-seat majority mark in the 234-member assembly.

VCK president Thirumavalavan and Legislature Party Leader Vanni Arasu submitted their letter to Governor Rajendra Arlekar at Lok Bhavan, stating that their support was being conveyed "in the interest of stable and democratic governance for the people of Tamil Nadu," according to PTI.

Hours earlier, Thirumavalavan had also handed an official confirmation letter to Aadhav Arjuna, TVK General Secretary for Election Campaign Management.

The IUML Legislature Party separately submitted its own letter, signed by Legislature Party Leader S.S.B. Syed Farooq Basha from Vaniyambadi and Deputy Leader A.M. Shahjahan from Papanasam, stating that their support was extended "in the interest of stable, secular and democratic governance."

The coalition's seat arithmetic now stands as follows: TVK with 108, Congress with 5, CPI and CPI(M) with 2 seats each — taking the tally to 116 on Friday. VCK's 2 seats pushed the count to exactly 118, and IUML's 2 seats have now taken the overall tally to 120, giving Vijay a comfortable buffer beyond the majority mark.

Vijay himself won from two seats - Perambur in North Chennai and Tiruchirappalli East - and will be required to vacate one under Indian law. Hence, the TVK will start from 107 seats.

The Left parties affirmed they would only support "from the outside" without participating in the government, continuing their SPA alliance with the DMK. Congress, notably, broke from the DMK-led SPA to back TVK, on the condition that TVK never maintain ties with the BJP.

TVK won 108 seats in the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections — 10 short of the 118 required for an outright majority — producing a hung house and sending coalition arithmetic into motion. The Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) was reduced to 73 seats, with the DMK securing 59 and the INC five, while the NDA won 53 seats with the AIADMK securing 47 and BJP only one.

The VCK's support is a particularly striking political turn. The Dalit-based party had spent years as a loyal constituent of the DMK-led alliance.

It also, reportedly, demanded the post of Deputy Chief Minister for Thirumavalavan in the new government. Vijay's swearing-in as Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister would mark one of the most dramatic political debuts in the state's history.
