(Bloomberg) -- Jeremy Corbyn paid 48,080 pounds ($68,000) in tax last year, his Labour Party said on Friday, as the U.K. opposition's top two politicians published their tax returns.
Corbyn's tax was paid on income of 136,762 pounds, which includes his lawmaker's salary, his pay as party leader, and the 68-year-old's pensions, Labour said. His tax return shows he received no fees from lectures last year, and that he paid out 890 pounds to charities. Labour's finance spokesman, John McDonnell, paid 24,099 pounds in tax on income of 87,353 pounds.
Labour has campaigned for all top politicians to publish their tax returns to bolster public trust in national leaders.
“There needs to be transparency,” McDonnell said last week in a panel debate at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. “We should publish our income tax returns. I do it, Jeremy Corbyn does it, I am saying to anyone in government who's involved in decisions around taxation: publish your income tax returns. I think wealthy people should do it. The corporations should.”
