BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari called for a "peaceful and transparent" voting process during the ongoing West Bengal Assembly election on Thursday.

Adhikari, who is contesting from both Nandigram and Bhabanipur, finds himself at the centre of the state's most anticipated showdown. In a direct challenge to the ruling Trinamool Congress, Adhikari is pitted against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in her traditional stronghold of Bhabanipur. This contest serves as a high-stakes rematch of their 2021 Nandigram battle, where Adhikari emerged victorious.

Adhikari emphasized that the democratic process must be conducted in a peaceful and transparent manner in the polls. He says, as reported by ANI, "I spoke to polling agents of my constituency... Polling should be held peacefully."

Targeting the Banerjee, he said: "If there are no dead or fake voters, or infiltrators, there is no chance for Mamata to win"

"Poriborton hoga (Change will happen). If a change does not take place this time, Sanatana in Bengal will be finished," he claimed.

Framing the 2026 election as an "existential battle" for the state, he said: “The Election Commission is doing good work, but there are some goons everywhere. Our polling agent has been arrested. Strict action should be taken immediately."

The first phase of voting for the assembly elections 2026 kicked off on Thursday. Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition and BJP's star candidate, cast his vote early at a polling station in his stronghold of Nandigram. Adhikari, who is also contesting the Bhabanipur seat in a high-voltage clash against Banerjee, arrived at the booth amid tight security.
