Counting of votes for local body elections held in Gujarat will be held today, April 28, with the outcome of one of the largest electoral exercises expected to reflect the general mood of voters ahead of the next year's assembly elections. Polling was conducted in 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats, and 260 taluka panchayats covering 9,200 seats. More than 4.18 crore voters were eligible to exercise their franchise.
The elections on Sunday were held under revised norms for Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservations, which required extensive delimitation and ward restructuring in several districts.
Nine newly-created municipal corporations, including Navsari, Gandhidham, Morbi, Vapi, Anand, Nadiad, Mehsana, Porbandar and Surendranagar, voted for the first time.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swept the Gujarat local body elections, winning all 15 municipal corporations that went to the polls and 33 of 34 district panchayats in the state.While final results for 250 taluka panchayats and 84 municipalities were still awaited, State Election Commission (SEC) data showed the ruling party had won most of these local bodies. Congress, AAP, and independents took a few.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party is on course for a decisive win in the Gujarat local body elections. Officials stated the BJP has taken an unassailable lead over Congress and other rivals, winning 6,472 of over 9,900 seats.

The Indian National Congress (INC) increased its vote share from four seats to seven seats in the Rajkot Municipal Corporation. INC secured all 4 seats in Ward-16 but managed only 3 seats in Ward-15. In Ward-15, Vashram Sagathiya, who had earlier left Congress for AAP before rejoining Congress and retained his RMC seat through an HC order, lost to BJP’s Nilesh Ram Herbha.

Minutes after former BJP leader Ashish Joshi won Ward 15 of VMC in Vadodara with a thumping margin as a Congress candidate, Gujarat police arrived to pick him in an alleged Prohibition Act case. Ward 15, home to victims of the January 2024 Harni Boat tragedy that killed 14 including 12 students and 2 teachers, saw 56% turnout on April 26. Joshi, who fought for justice for the victims, was suspended from BJP in May 2025 after two victims’ mothers interrupted CM Bhupendra Patel at an event, reported Indian Express.

AAP is currently standing at second place as counting for Gujarat Local Body Polls continues. AAP has won 247 seats so far. Congress has secured 116 seats, reported PTI.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a historic and absolute victory in the newly formed Morbi Municipal Corporation, winning all 52 seats across 13 wards.
Neither the Congress nor the Aam Aadmi Party were able to open their account in the city.

BJP wins Gandhidham and Bhuj Municipal Corporation.
In Narmada district, the newly carved taluka of Chikhda saw the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) sweep 15 of the 16 seats in the maiden election to the Chikhda Taluka Panchayat.
In the Karamsad-Anand Municipal Corporation, the Congress has won 7 of the 52 seats declared so far, while the BJP has secured 31. In Nadiad Municipal Corporation, the Congress has won 9 of 52 seats so far, compared with the BJP’s 29.
In the Vadodara Municipal Corporation, results have been declared for 41 of the 76 seats so far, with the BJP winning 36 and the Congress 5.
In Ward 14 of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation, the Congress wrested two seats from the BJP, which had swept all four seats in the ward in the 2021 elections.
The BJP won 11 of the 16 wards in the Jamnagar Municipal Corporation, securing control of the civic body.

The ruling BJP has taken a lead in the local body elections in Gujarat, winning 2,531 seats so far out of more than 9,200 as per the initial rounds of counting that began on Tuesday morning.
The BJP has emerged far ahead of its rivals, clinching 1,165 seats in taluka panchayats, 251 in district panchayats, 825 in municipalities and 290 in municipal corporations, according to early trends.
According to the latest data shared by the State Election Commission (SEC), the Congress has won 385 seats, while the Independents and other parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), have bagged 169 seats.
In Gujarat’s Gandhinagar, results for 399 candidates in the local body elections will be decided today, including 69 candidates for the District Panchayat. Counting will also determine outcomes for 171 candidates in Kalol, Mansa and Dehgam Taluka Panchayats, and 159 candidates in Dehgam and Kalol municipalities.

BJP wins Isanpur, Thaltej, Vejalpur, Nava Vadaj, Asarwa, Gota, Jodhpur, Chandkheda and Amraiwadi. These are nine out of 48 wards won in Ahmedabad.
The BJP has swept all five Surat district panchayat seats in the area, including Olpad and Pinjarat. At the taluka panchayat level, the party has won all 24 seats, 13 of them unopposed and the remaining 11 by comfortable margins.
Of the 15 municipal corporations in Gujarat that went to the polls on April 26, the BJP has so far won seven — Morbi, Porbandar, Vapi, Nadiad, Navsari, Mehsana and Surendranagar.
Veteran Congress leader Chandrakant Shrivastava retained his seat from Ward 16 of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation, extending a long run in the civic body that dates back to 1985.
BJP candidates were declared winners in all seats across five wards of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.
Congress won Behrampura ward 35 in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, while BJP dominated overall. BJP swept all Bavla taluka panchayat seats unopposed and won panels in Isanpur ward 45 and Navrangpura. In Bavla, BJP took Bhayla, Shia, Gagad, and Roykabethak; Congress won Kesardi.
In Ahmedabad, counting is taking place at centres including LD Engineering College and Gujarat College, with traffic restrictions imposed in surrounding areas from midnight to facilitate the process and ensure security.
Congress opened its account in Surat Municipal Corporation after over a decade, with Arshad Jariwala winning from Ward No. 12.
AAP opened its account with victories in Bagsara and Halwad, while the BJP consolidated its early advantage across several seats in south Gujarat.
Congress registered early gains in the Bharuch Municipality polls, winning Ward 1 and Ward 2. The party has so far bagged 8 of the 44 seats.
Early trends from Ahmedabad showed the BJP ahead in several wards, including Thaltej, Navrangpura, Asarwa and Bapunagar, as vote counting continued.
Former Congress corporator Balu Surve loses in ward number 13 in Vadodara Municipal Corporation.
Gujarat Pradesh Organisation General Secretary Manoj Sorathia has lost. Sorathia has lost in Surat ward number 4.

A 68-year-old woman died of cardiac arrest after casting her vote at a polling booth in Patan.
A 48-year-old gram panchayat peon on election duty collapsed and died in Anand district.
Amit Solanki, who worked as a peon at the Sansej gram panchayat office, suddenly fell unconscious at a polling booth in the same village, said Taluka Development Officer and Assistant Returning Officer of Petlad M V Solanki.
Meanwhile, repolling was being held on Monday at a village in Surendranagar district, where voting was cancelled due to a technical glitch in an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM), officials said
