What Could Have Held Back Opening?
Reddit users pointed to a combination of festive-season factors and lingering audience scepticism to explain Ramayan's muted opening-day performance. Several Reddit users noted that the film's Thursday release coincided with the busy pre-Diwali period, when many people are travelling home for the holidays, preparing for Lakshmi Puja, or occupied with family commitments, limiting their ability to visit cinemas.
High ticket prices also emerged as a recurring concern, with users suggesting that family audiences may prefer to wait until after the festive rush before watching the film together. Some commenters said they were postponing their visit to theatres until next week when travel plans ease.
Another frequently cited factor was the shadow of Adipurush. Many users argued that the poor reception to the 2023 mythological adaptation has made audiences more cautious about investing in another big-budget retelling of the Ramayana, despite positive reviews and word-of-mouth for the latest release.
Reddit users were also critical of the film's promotional strategy. Several felt that the marketing campaign failed to generate sufficient excitement in the domestic market, with some claiming the makers focused disproportionately on overseas audiences and English-language promotions. Others argued that a Friday release might have resulted in a stronger opening and better momentum heading into the holiday period.
Despite concerns around the opening-day numbers, the broader sentiment remained optimistic. Many users said positive word-of-mouth could help the film gain traction after Diwali celebrations conclude, with audiences expected to return to theatres in greater numbers during the holiday week and beyond.
