The Delhi government has declared a public holiday on Wednesday, Feb. 5, because of the Assembly Elections in the national capital. The move aims to encourage more people to come out and vote. The holiday applies to all private and government employees.
"There will be a public holiday on February 5 for all government offices, local and autonomous bodies, and public sector undertakings under the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, in view of the General Election to the Delhi Legislative Assembly," Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena said in a notification.
The Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi had also ordered employers to grant a paid holiday to its employees to cast their votes on Wednesday.
"Election Commission of India has announced Legislative Assembly Elections in NCT of Delhi, to be held on 5th February 2025 (Wednesday). Subsequently, Deputy Chief Electoral Officer, GNCTD vide letter dated 08/01/2025 has requested to issue a public notice for grant of paid holiday to the employees of all the establishments, factories, other business establishments in Delhi," the CEO's notice said.
"Accordingly, all such employers of Industrial Establishments/Factories/ Shops and Commercial Establishments in NCT of Delhi shall grant paid holiday to their employees to enable them to cast their vote in their respective constituency on the day of polling i.e. 05/02/2025 (Wednesday) in case scheduled day is a working day for them/electors," it added.

The public holiday on Feb. 5 will mean that several institutions will remain closed. Here is a list of what is closed and what’s open on the election in Delhi.
Delhi Assembly Elections 2025 : What’s Closed?
Government offices, including central and state government ones, will remain closed
Private and public sector banks will remain closed
The Supreme Court, Delhi High Court as well as district courts will also remain closed on account of the polls
Schools and colleges will also be shut during the elections as these will serve as polling stations
Liquor stores and licensed establishments will be closed from Feb. 3 to 6 p.m. on Feb. 5
Delhi Elections: What’s Open?
Emergency services like hospitals, ambulances, and police stations will remain open on polling day
Delhi Metro will remain open and start its services from 4 am and extend them till midnight on the next day to facilitate ease of commute
The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) is also providing additional buses on 35 routes to make sure voters can access their polling stations
Businesses such as grocery shops, retail stores and restaurants are expected to remain open.
Election to the 70-member Delhi Assembly will be conducted on Feb. 5, where a three-way battle between the ruling Aam Aadmi Party and opposition BJP and Congress will decide the national capital’s next Chief Minister. The votes will be counted on Saturday, Feb. 8.
