Maharashtra's total migrant population is just over 21 lakh, as per the 2011 Census of India data, and most of them find themselves in its capital city Mumbai. While some come to the maximum city with a job in hand, others migrate with nothing but the hope of a higher income and a better livelihood, not just for themselves but also for their families back home.

BloombergQuint delves deeper into the lives of two such migrants who came to Mumbai in search of a better life.

Mannilal left his job as a milk man and a share cropper at his village in Rajasthan. The lack of job opportunities at his village in Nadia, West Bengal, forced Kamal Das to sell his mobile phone to buy a train ticket to Mumbai.

Mannilal, now a tea stall owner, came to the city 30 years ago to earn enough to support an extended family of more than 20 people. Kamal Das, a relative newcomer to the city, landed in the city after he failed to find any employment in his village or the neighbouring cities. Here is their story.
