BRICS nations on Saturday agreed to expand cooperation on cleaner transport systems and low-carbon aviation fuels, seeking to curb emissions without undermining economic growth.
The pledge was enshrined in the New Delhi Declaration, adopted at the two-day BRICS summit in the Indian capital under New Delhi's leadership.
The declaration urged member states to pool expertise, mobilise investment and advance transport technologies to build infrastructure that can withstand disruption while reducing its environmental footprint.

Member countries also highlighted the importance of incorporating circular economy principles into the development and maintenance of transport infrastructure.
“We reaffirm the commitment of BRICS countries to deepen cooperation in the areas of transport policy, investment, technological and capacity building with a view to develop sustainable and resilient transport infrastructure,” the declaration said.
The grouping also recognised sustainable aviation fuels and other low-carbon aviation fuels as important tools for reducing carbon emissions from international aviation.
BRICS leaders welcomed the establishment of the BRICS Forum on Sustainable Aviation Fuels and the BRICS Framework of Cooperation for Exchange of Knowledge on Transport Decarbonisation, with a focus on leveraging renewable energy potential.
The declaration also highlighted the creation of the BRICS Urban Mobility Hub, aimed at facilitating knowledge exchange and cooperation on accessible, affordable, inclusive and smart urban transport solutions.
On logistics and railways, member countries welcomed the BRICS Logistics Supply-Chain Cooperation Framework and encouraged discussions on a proposed BRICS Railway Research Network.

The grouping said transport cooperation would be pursued while respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all member states.
It also called for further dialogue in areas including civil aviation to strengthen transport connectivity and capacity.
The declaration welcomed the expansion of the International Civil Aviation Organization Council by four seats to improve representation of underrepresented regions, including Africa and the Asia-Pacific.
It also welcomed the candidatures of Ethiopia, endorsed by the African Union as its sole African candidate, and Indonesia for the additional seats in elections at the 43rd Extraordinary ICAO Assembly.
