India added over 86,000 cases in 24 hours, taking the total tally over 40 lakh in the world's second-most populous country, according to the Health Ministry's update as of 8 a.m. on Sept. 5. This includes nearly 70,000 deaths and over 31 lakh patients who have recovered.

According to the ICMR, India is testing an average of 9.5 lakh samples a day now.

Meanwhile, the Centre on Friday asked 15 districts of four states reporting higher number of Covid-19 deaths and infections to work on drawing up proper containment zones, effective monitoring of home isolation cases, adequate testing, ensuring seamless hospitalisation and reducing the waiting time in triaging.

At a review meeting held by Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan, the district authorities were asked to bring down the response time of ambulances while ensuring zero refusal by them and effective clinical management of hospitalised cases to cut down on the fatalities due to the disease, sources said.

Global Update:

Globally, cases crossed 26.3 million leaving over 8,70,000 dead as of Friday night.

Just weeks after schools began reopening, U.S. colleges are hosting raging clusters of Covid-19 infections, crises that are both medical and political. The U.K., France, Italy and Spain all reported record cases since the spring outbreak in Europe. New Zealand reported its first virus death in more than three months.
