Brian Thompson, the chief executive officer (CEO) of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot early Wednesday in midtown Manhattan, according to the New York Police Department.
The 50-year-old was shot in the chest outside the New York Hilton Midtown where his company was hosting an event, a Bloomberg report said, quoting a person familiar with the incident.
Thompson was rushed to Mount Sinai West in a critical condition, where he was declared dead. As per the Bloomberg report, no arrests have been made so far, with the shooter fleeing the scene.
Though the motive is not known yet, the CEO’s wife said the CEO had previously received threats, NBC News reported.
Citing information shared by the New York Police, the Bloomberg report mentioned the attacker has been described as a white man with a grey backpack, wearing a cream-coloured coat and black and white sneakers.

Who Was Brian Thompson?
Brian Thompson was a 20-year veteran of UnitedHealth Group Inc., which runs UnitedHealthcare.
As an executive of the UnitedHealth Group since 2004, he held key leadership roles such as CFO for Employer and Individual, Community and State, and Medicare and Retirement divisions.
He led important government programmes of UnitedHealth previously, including medicare and retirement, and community and state divisions.
During his various key stints at UnitedHealth Group, the company saw significant growth. Under Thompson's leadership, the company executed 35 acquisitions in 10 years.
After working for nearly two decades in finance positions across the business, Thompson was made CEO of UnitedHealthcare insurance division of the company in 2021.
In 2023, the top executive reportedly earned $10.3 million. As per the Bloomberg report, the insurance segment he oversaw is expected to generate $280 billion revenue this year and is the country's largest health insurer.
The 50-year-old worked at PwC for over six years before joining UnitedHealth. A certified public accountant, Thompson graduated from the University of Iowa in 1997 with a Bachelor's in Business Administration.
Thompson lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with his family. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
