TikTok plans to require a broad swath of its US employees to return to the office five days a week beginning in September, a move that would significantly scale back the company's hybrid-work policy, according to Business Insider, which cited three employees familiar with the plans.
The policy is expected to affect employees currently on hybrid schedules, including those who are allowed to work from home at least one day a week, although some TikTok teams already follow a five-day in-office routine.

Employees in TikTok Shop, the company's e-commerce division, have reportedly been required to work from the office every day for more than a year.
In December, the company reportedly told employees across departments including product, marketing and advertising sales to prepare for a full return to office in 2026.
The September mandate would represent a further shift away from hybrid working arrangements that became widespread across the technology sector following the Covid-19 pandemic.

TikTok has offices in about a dozen US cities, including New York, Austin, Los Angeles and Chicago, and employs thousands of people across the country.
TikTok's move comes as major technology and media companies increasingly push employees back into offices.
While some firms have introduced mandatory five-day office schedules, others continue to support hybrid or remote-first models.
Companies including Spotify have retained flexible work policies, while Dropbox continues to follow a “virtual-first” approach. Dropbox co-CEO Ashraf Alkarmi has defended the model, arguing that flexibility and employee autonomy remain important.
The return-to-office push has divided the technology industry, with proponents saying that in-person work strengthens collaboration, productivity and workplace culture, while supporters of remote work argue that flexibility can improve employee satisfaction and retention.
