Jurassic World Brings 'Dinosaur' Gains For PVR

Jurassic World which released on Friday has seen the biggest ever opening at the box office, grossing around $511 million worldwide, in the first weekend. Jurassic World beat Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 which had amassed $483 million globally in its first weekend. "The numbers in India have also been extremely strong. I would put it in the same category as Fast and the Furious 7 and Avengers (Age of Ultron) which have been the two tent poles which have released in this financial year. So this is the third straight blockbuster in the same category as Fast and Furious and Avengers," Kamal Giachandani, CEO, PVR Pictures told NDTV. According to movie industry website koimoi.com, Jurassic World has amassed over Rs 20 crore in India in its first weekend. "Our chain has done close to 85 per cent occupancy on a fairly large capacity. Jurassic World was expected to do well, as a result the capacity that was allotted to the film was fairly aggressive and on that the film has done 85 per cent," Mr Giachandani said. (Watch) Jurassic World's collections are unprecedented and trade experts have been tracking the numbers closely worldwide. "The final numbers that have come out for the first weekend have exceeded the expectations almost 100 per cent which is fairly phenomenal because the tracking mechanism in the more developed markets like the US is extremely sophisticated, so to exceed that by 100 per cent is an absolutely fantastic achievement," the PVR Pictures CEO said. Jurassic World continues to hold strong at the box office and do well even on the week days, PVR said. PVR has close to 475 screens with about 1.10 lakh seats per show. Jurassic World is showing in about 40 per cent of their screens, PVR said. "This is a very aggressive capacity. Typically Hollywood films are not assigned this sort of a capacity," Mr Giachandani said. However, it would be unfair to say that Hollywood movies are taking away business from Hindi films or other Indian language films, PVR said. "Hollywood films have typically contributed typically 7-8 per cent of our country's gross box office contributions this percentage has not really changed so much which indicates that Hollywood movies have not really taken away business from Hindi films, it's just that the market in totality has been growing and as a result of that the Hollywood film business has also been expanding," Mr Giachandani said. Big Upcoming Releases - Hollywood: Tom Cruise's latest in the Mission Impossible franchise, the latest Terminator franchise, Marvel's Antman. "Antman, which is a very successful property from Marvel, it's been transformed to celluloid. With marvel's successful track record at the box office everyone would be watching Antman with a lot of curiosity and interest," PVR said. Antman is slated for a July release. Bollywood: Salman Khan's Bajrangi Bhaijaan is slated for a July release. Akshay Kumar's Brothers is also due to for release. A ShahRukh Khan film is supposed to hit screens this Christmas and another Salman Khan film with Sooraj Barjatiya is due for a Diwali release.
