(Bloomberg) -- China sent about 135 million travelers beyond the mainland in the 12 months through June 30, with almost half going to Hong Kong or Macau. Among sovereign nations, Thailand last year overtook South Korea as the top destination, attracting more tourists with tropical islands, cheaper shopping and revised visa rules. Although China's outbound total is about a tenth of its population, a much bigger horde -- about 663 million people -- is expected to travel domestically during the week-long National Day holiday that kicks off Saturday.
