(Bloomberg) -- A Danish court has ruled that a Slovak citizen should be expelled from the country after breaking its laws prohibiting begging.
The Copenhagen Court arrived at its decision to deport the person -- a woman whose name it didn't give -- following several earlier breaches in which she was apprehended. As well as being expelled, the woman will go to jail for 40 days as punishment for begging in the Copenhagen area, according to a statement published by Danish police on Wednesday.
“This is the first time a person has been expelled from Denmark for begging,” police said.
The court case made clear that the woman had come to Denmark with the express purpose of generating an income through begging, police said.
“Even though the woman is an EU citizen, and therefore enjoys expanded protections against deportation, the court decided that there were grounds for expulsion,” police said.
