Bharat Forge chairperson Baba Kalyani has opposed any move towards mediation in the high-stakes Rs 1 lakh crore Kalyani family dispute, urging the Bombay High Court to proceed with hearing his plea without delay.

The dispute, which involves claims over family assets and arrangements dating back decades, has drawn attention due to its scale and its potential implications for Bharat Forge, the listed flagship of the Kalyani Group. Investors are closely tracking developments, as any escalation or resolution could influence sentiment around the company's governance and future control.

During the hearing on Wednesday, counsel representing Baba Kalyani made it clear that he is not inclined to resolve the matter through mediation. The argument centred on the need for the court to continue hearing the application and grant the reliefs sought, without the process being stalled by settlement discussions.

The Kalyani side stressed that mediation should not come in the way of judicial determination of key legal issues already before the court.

On the other hand, the defendant, Baba Kalyani's siblings, Sugandha Hiremath and Gaurishankar Kalyani expressed willingness to explore mediation, calling it the most effective route to resolve what is essentially a family dispute involving substantial shared assets.

Hiremath's counsel urged the court to consider referring the matter to mediation in an attempt to avoid prolonged litigation.

The bench acknowledged the potential benefits of mediation in family disputes but observed that such a route can only be pursued if both parties consent. With Baba Kalyani firmly opposed at this stage, the court stopped short of directing mediation.

However, the defendants sought additional time to persuade Baba Kalyani to reconsider his stance.

Accepting the request, the court has now listed the matter for further hearing on Thursday, where it will decide whether the case proceeds in court or is referred to mediation.
