Pilots' grouping ALPA India on Friday urged the civil aviation ministry and regulator DGCA to suspend flight operations into high-risk conflict zones till a centralised risk assessment is carried out amid the escalating West Asia crisis.

Stressing the need for having war-risk insurance, it also said the watchdog should mandate immediate disclosure and verification of valid insurance coverage, including war-risk clauses, for all crew operating into or near conflict zones.

The Middle East conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran has significantly disrupted flight operations, and airlines have curtailed their services.

In a letter to DGCA, Airline Pilots' Association of India (ALPA India) said commercial airlines do not possess the requisite intelligence, surveillance capabilities, or geopolitical risk assessment infrastructure necessary to adequately evaluate threats in active conflict environments.

Maria Martinez, of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said on Friday that over 1,900 people have been killed and at ⁠least 20,000 wounded in ⁠Iran since the start of US and Israeli attacks.

According to Saudi drone debris fell near military site, reported Bloomberg. However, no injuries were reported.

Ahmad Alavi, head of Tehran city council’s cultural heritage committee said US and Israeli strikes have hit at least 120 museums and historic sites across the country since the war began. In a press conference to address crude oil prices due to Middle East crisis, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary (Marketing & Oil Refinery), Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said:

• We are still in the war situation 
• Our crude, LPG and LNG supplies have been affected.
• Government has taken several important decisions.
• We have sufficient crude inventories
• Have lines up supplies for next 2 months.
• Situation is comfortable with LPG and LNG.
• Refineries are working on more than 100% capacity.
• Commercial supplies have been restored from over the past few weeks.

PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on Friday criticised Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for taking almost a month to unequivocally condemn Israel’s attack on Iran, calling the delay “disheartening”.

Taking a dig at the chief minister, Mehbooma, in a post on X, said, "How disheartening that it took our chief minister, the only Muslim CM of India's only Muslim majority state, an entire month to unequivocally condemn Israel's dastardly attack on Iran."

The former chief minister said even the Punjab Assembly "acted swiftly", becoming the first legislature to pass a resolution to condemn and show its solidarity with Iran.

"Yet the JK government showed no such urgency or genuine concern, choosing to limit its responses to mere rhetoric and speeches instead of a clear and principled stand," Mehbooba added.

Kuwait's Mubarak Al Kabeer port on Bubiyan Island was hit by hostile drones and cruise missiles, causing material damage but no casualties, according to the Ministry of Public Works, Al Jazeera reported

Since the war began, more than 1,900 people have been killed in Iran, according to the Health Ministry. Eighteen people have died in Israel, while at least three Israeli soldiers have also been killed in Lebanon. At least 13 American troops have been killed. Four people in the occupied West Bank and 20 in Gulf Arab states have also died.

Authorities said more than 1,100 people have died in Lebanon. In Iraq, where Iranian-supported militia groups have entered the conflict, 80 members of the security forces have been killed.
 

Israel launched a wave of strikes on Iran early on Friday ahead of a planned UN Security Council meeting to discuss attacks on Iranian civilian infrastructure, while Iran and the United States appeared at a diplomatic impasse, setting the stage for more potential escalation as the first month of the Middle East war neared its end.

Smoke also rose over Beirut, although Israel did not immediately report hitting the Lebanese capital, while air raid sirens sounded in Israel as the military said it was working to intercept Iranian missiles. Iran kept up its attacks on its Gulf Arab neighbours, with incoming drones and missiles reported in both Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.
 

Jean-Noël Barrot said at a news conference that the discussions are continuing in New York on the resolution for what he called a “strictly defensive” international mission for the vital waterway.

Barrot said the mission would escort ships and ensure traffic can resume as quickly as possible once “calm” is restored. The hope is that such a multilateral mission would help lower energy prices.
 

Maximo Torero said markets will absorb the Iran war's impact if the conflict ends in the next two weeks or so. But if it continues for three to six months it will not only impact food security and energy but other sectors as well because prices will rise. And those rising prices, and the fall in remittances from overseas workers, will affect economic development and growth across the globe, the chief economist for the UN Food and Agriculture Organization told a UN press conference.

He said an El Nino climate phenomenon, which tends to increase global temperatures, is also expected soon. A strong El Nino could significantly exacerbate the economic situation, he said.

“My message is, we need to find a way to resolve this problem as soon as possible,” Torero said in the video press conference. “Because, if not, the consequences … could be very dramatic, even worse that what happened in the Ukraine war."

Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin, an Israeli military spokesperson, said that the army needs about 15,000 soldiers, roughly half of them combat troops, to be at full strength for its multiple missions.

With tens of thousands still deployed in Gaza and more sent to Lebanon, Defrin said Israel expected to broaden operations on several fronts. Defrin also pointed to the occupied West Bank.

Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, the military's chief of staff, warned last week that the army should not have to divert forces to the West Bank during a multifront war to contend with attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinians and unauthorized outposts in military-controlled zones.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday condemned the "unjust and illegal war imposed on Iran" and requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to use his influence to end the war in the interest of humanity.

Abdullah made the statement in the Legislative Assembly as the Leader of the House after several National Conference members pressed for a brief statement, despite opposition from the BJP MLAs who said the Iran crisis is an international issue and does not fall in the domain of this House.

France is hosting the G7 meeting at a historic abbey near Versailles and has been highly sceptical of the war. The chief of the French defence staff, Gen. Fabien Mandon, complained this week that US allies had not been informed about the start of hostilities.

“They have just decided to intervene in the Near and Middle East without notifying us,” Mandon said. “We acted immediately, surprised by an American ally, who remains an ally, but who is less and less predictable and doesn't even bother to inform us when it decides to engage in military operations. This affects our security. This affects our interests.”
 

Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with the chief ministers of all states, barring those which are going to polls, and review their preparedness and plans in the wake of the Middle East conflict. The initiative is aimed at ensuring synergy of efforts in the spirit of 'Team India', the sources said.

This is the first time that the prime minister will hold a meeting with the chief ministers on the Middle East conflict which started on Feb 28 with the attack by the US-Israel on Iran. The Persian nation has also retaliated by firing on its Gulf neighbours and Israel.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte reiterated the increase in defence spending by alliance members — which Trump has urged — saying Europe and Canada had been 'overreliant on US military might' but a 'shift in mindset' has taken hold.

Rutte said NATO has been clear that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon and has "long recognised the threat Iran's missile programme posed to allies and their interests. And what the United States is currently doing is degrading those capabilities, both the nuclear and the missile."

Trump has complained that he has not been able to rally support behind his war of choice in Iran and that NATO and most other allies have rejected his calls to help secure the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran's chokehold has disrupted oil shipments and pushed up energy prices.

“We're there to protect NATO, to protect them from Russia. But they're not there to protect us,” Trump said on Thursday. He later added: “I never thought we needed them. I was more doing a test.”
 

An airstrike with three missiles targeted a building in Beirut's southern suburbs early on Friday, security sources said.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has said the ASEAN leaders' summit, scheduled for May, will go ahead as planned but with a scaled-down, "bare-bones" agenda focused on the impact of the Iran war. According to the Philippines' Inquirer, discussions will centre on key regional concerns such as fuel supplies, food prices and the welfare of migrant workers—issues with direct implications for Asian economies, including India.

Iran has banned its sports teams from traveling to countries it considers 'hostile', Iranian state TV reported on Thursday ahead of Tractor FC's scheduled soccer game in Saudi Arabia. The ban announced by Iran's Ministry of Sports in Tehran didn't mention the World Cup which starts June 11 in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The ministry's statement singled out the Tractor game against Shabab Al Ahli of Dubai that was set to be played in Saudi Arabia. It's a playoff game in the Asian Champions League Elite.

Spain's Parliament has approved a package of emergency economic measures, including slashing the sales tax on gas and electricity bills from 21% to 10%. The government estimates that car owners will save 30 cents on the euro for every litre of gas, or around 20 euros per tank.

Truck drivers, farmers, herders and fishermen will be able to claim refunds of 20 cents per each litre for diesel from the government. The same refund will apply to fertilisers. Spain is also freezing the price of butane and propane.

The government says the measures total 5 billion euros ($5.7 billion) and will help 20 million of Spain's 49 million residents.

The Iran war's disruption of oil exports from the Middle East will substantially boost consumer prices while also slowing growth in the United States and many other developed countries, the Paris-based Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development said.

The OECD expects US inflation to jump to an annual average of 4.2% this year, from about 2.6% in 2025. The increase will manly be driven by spiking gas costs, but fertiliser exports have also been interrupted and could raise food prices in coming months, the OECD said.

Growth is expected to slip to 2% this year from 2.1% in 2025, then decline further next year to 1.7%. In 20 of the largest countries, referred to as the Group of 20, which includes Japan, Europe, and large emerging economies such as Brazil, inflation is forecast to rise to 4% from 3.4%.

Iran is raking it in amidst the war, with its crude oil selling at a slimmer discount to Brent, the international benchmark, which has shot up above $100 a barrel. Despite the conflict, Iran's exports remain steady at 1.6 million barrels a day, with ships loading at Kharg Island and exiting the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz. In fact, Tehran is earning around $139 million daily from its Iranian Light crude blend sales, up from $115 million in February.

This windfall is largely due to Iran being one of the few countries still able to ship crude through the Strait of Hormuz, while other Gulf producers face disruptions. China is a major buyer, snapping up Iran's flagship crude grade at a narrow discount.

Some fear they may never return. Elias Konsol and his neighbors fled the Christian border village of Alma al-Shaab with UN peacekeepers' help. Konsol said there were no weapons or Hezbollah fighters in his village, but it was forced to evacuate anyway. "We no longer know our fate," he said. Iran sent a letter to the United Nations over claims that the country's foreign minister and parliament speaker had been "targets for assassination." The letter, dated Thursday and signed by Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani, focused on media reports that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf both had been spared for the time being by Israel and the US as negotiations to reach a ceasefire in the war go on.

"The reports indicate the existence of an operational framework contemplating the assassination of the highest-ranking political officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran," the letter reads. It added, "The conditional nature of the purported suspension' further underscores that the threat remains real, deliberate and ongoing."

The letter called any such programme "state-sponsored terrorism." Qalibaf has been considered as a possible negotiating partner to the US, while Araghchi has continued diplomatic outreach.

Iranian communications to the United Nations maritime authority and the experience of ships transiting the Strait suggest the creation of something akin to a "toll booth." Ships must enter Iranian waters and be vetted by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps. At least two vessels have paid for passage.

Iran has also started charging transit fees on some commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, adding to uncertainty in global markets.

Thousands more US troops neared the region, Israel poured more troops into southern Lebanon to fight the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah, and Tehran tightened its grip on the crucial Strait of Hormuz.

Sirens over Israel warned of barrages of incoming Iranian missiles, and Gulf nations worked to intercept fire. Heavy strikes were reported in Iran's capital and other cities.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio slammed the imbalance in the US's relationship with NATO. He pointed out that the US has consistently provided support in various conflicts, but when the US needed help, NATO allies didn't come through as expected.
