On the 41st day of the ongoing US-Israel-Iran conflict, a ceasefire deal to pause the war in Iran appeared to hang by a thread on after the Islamic Republic closed the Strait of Hormuz again in response to Israeli attacks in Lebanon. The White House demanded that the channel be reopened and sought to keep peace talks on track.

The US and Iran both claimed victory after reaching the agreement, and world leaders expressed relief, even as more drones and missiles hit Iran and Gulf Arab countries.

At the same time, Israel intensified its attacks on the Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon, hitting several commercial and residential areas in Beirut without warning. The fresh violence threatened to scuttle what US Vice President J D Vance called a "fragile" deal.

In a speech to Parliament on Thursday, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni warned that any extra Iranian duties in the Strait of Hormuz would have "unpredictable economic consequences," stressing that a full restoration of freedom of movement is needed in the area. Meloni indicated that as the most critical point of the agreement between the US and Iran.

"Full restoration of freedom of movement in the Strait of Hormuz is needed, and it must not be subject to any restrictions, as appears to have happened in recent hours," she said.

The Italian prime minister also suggested that, if the crisis in Iran worsens, the European Union should consider suspending the stability and growth pact — a set of rules governing public finances within the EU — in a similar response to that given for the COVID crisis.

In a post on X, Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu said, "We continue to strike Hezbollah with force, precision, and determination. In Beirut, we eliminated Ali Youssef Kharshi, the personal secretary of Hezbollah terror organization Secretary-General Naim Qassem and one of the people closest to him."

"At the same time, overnight, the IDF struck a series of terror infrastructures in southern Lebanon: crossings used to transfer thousands of weapons, rockets, and launchers, as well as weapons depots, launchers, and Hezbollah headquarters," added Netanyahu.

Netanyahu signed off with the message, "Our message is clear: Whoever acts against Israeli civilians—will be struck. We will continue to strike Hezbollah wherever required, until we restore full security to the residents of the north."

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the US should exert some control over Israel to ensure the success of the ceasefire with Iran. Amid Pakistan-facilitated peace talks to resolve the US-Iran conflict, he also said that Pakistan has done what others could not.

"The US should exert some control over Israel. Mohammad Eslami, who leads the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran, made the remarks to journalists including one from The Associated Press in Tehran, Iran, during commemorations for the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran War Live Updates: Worships Starts At Al-Aqsa Mosque, Other Jerusalem Sites Again

The Al-Aqsa Mosque compound reopened with dawn prayer today after being closed for the duration of the Iran war, according to Jerusalem's Islamic Waqf, the Jordanian religious authority that administers the compound. Access had been prohibited altogether, or restricted to a few dozen faithful, at Christian, Jewish and Muslim sites during the now-paused conflict, when missile attacks from Iran often sent Jerusalem residents into shelters.

The restrictions subdued Lent, Passover and Ramadan celebrations for many in some of the holiest sites for adherents of Christianity, Islam and Judaism.

A New York-based think tank is warning that the tentative ceasefire in the Iran war "hovers on the verge of collapse." The Soufan Center said the Israeli strikes on Lebanon risked the deal falling apart.

"Even if Lebanon was formally outside the deal, the scale of Israel's strikes was likely to be viewed as escalatory, nonetheless," it wrote in an analysis. Pakistani authorities have stepped-up security in the capital, Islamabad, deploying hundreds of additional police and paramilitary forces ahead of much-awaited peace talks between the United States and Iran. A nearby hotel, where the delegations are expected to stay, has also been brought under tight security.

Lebanon Civil Defense spokesperson Elie Khairallah told The Associated Press that a wounded woman was found alive under the rubble overnight in the seaside Beirut neighborhood of Ain Mreisseh. A man whose building collapsed after strikes in the capital's southern suburbs was also found alive in rubble.

"The others so far have been killed," Khairallah said.

Meanwhile, others like Mohammad Chehab, a Syrian man from Deir el-Zour, are anxiously waiting. Six of his 10 family members have been found but others are still missing. He tries to stay hopeful. "They've been searching all day," he said nervously, watching rescue workers dig through the rubble.

Iran War Live Updates: Has Iran Put Sea Mines In Strait of Hormuz?

Semiofficial news agencies in Iran published a chart Thursday suggesting the country's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard put sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz during the war. The reports came from the ISNA news agency, as well as Tasnim, which is believed to be close to the Guard.

The chart showed a large circle marked "danger zone" in Farsi over the Traffic Separation Scheme, which was the route ships used to take through the strait. That was where the Guard allegedly put the mines. It suggested that ships travel up north through waters closer to Iran's mainland near Larak Island, a route that some ships were observed taking during the war. The dates on the chart ran from Feb. 28 until Thursday, April 9.

In a post on X, Macron wrote, "Today I met with Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian, as well as with American President Donald Trump. To both of them, I indicated that their decision to accept a ceasefire was the best possible one."

"I expressed my hope that the ceasefire will be fully respected by each of the belligerents, across all theaters of confrontation, including in Lebanon. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met separately with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte at the State Department before the White House talks.

In a statement, the State Department said Rubio and Rutte discussed the war with Iran, along with US efforts to negotiate an end to the Russia-Ukraine war and “increasing coordination and burden shifting with NATO allies”.

The Iranian Parliament speaker said planned talks with the US to seek a permanent halt to hostilities were “unreasonable” because Washington broke three of Tehran's 10 conditions for an end to the fighting.

In a social media post, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf objected to Israeli attacks on Hezbollah, an alleged drone incursion into Iranian airspace after the ceasefire went into effect and the US assertion that it will not accept any Iranian enrichment capabilities in a final agreement.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi insisted that an end to the war in Lebanon was part of the ceasefire deal with the US, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump said the truce did not cover Lebanon.

"The world sees the massacres in Lebanon," Araghchi said in a post on X. "The ball is in the US court, and the world is watching whether it will act on its commitments."
