General Syed Aamer Raza's recent appointment as Pakistan's first Commander of the National Strategic Command (CNSC) has drawn attention. Under the National Command Authority, this recently created position is in charge of the operational integration of Pakistan's nuclear and strategic forces.
Raza is the first to be named Commander of the NSC, a newly established position in charge of the operational integration of the nation's strategic forces, after being promoted from lieutenant general to four-star general in July.
Raza has been described as Pakistan's second-most powerful military figure behind Field Marshal Asim Munir due to his ascension. However, rather than being a strictly defined rating, that description is better interpreted as an evaluation of his role and responsibilities, media reports said.

Raza now leads the nation's new strategic leadership structure, while Munir continues to serve as Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces.
Four-Decade Military Career
Raza has served in the military for about 40 years. After being commissioned into the 6th Lancers of the Pakistan Army in 1988, he held a variety of staff, instructional, and leadership roles. He commanded an infantry division, an armoured brigade, an infantry brigade in South Waziristan, and the 6th Lancers. He also held the positions of Director General of the Weapons and Equipment Directorate and Chief of Staff at II Corps.
Raza holds degrees from the National Defence University in Islamabad and the Command and Staff College in Quetta. Additionally, he did postgraduate studies in combat, defence, and strategic studies while studying international relations at the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom.
He then reportedly worked as Chief Instructor at the Command and Staff College and as an instructor at the School of Armour and Mechanised Warfare.
Raza was appointed chairman of Pakistan's largest defence manufacturing company, Heavy Industries Taxila, in April 2020. In October 2022, he received a promotion to the post of lieutenant general, and in May 2023, he was named Commander IV Corps, Lahore.
As Chief of the General Staff, one of the Pakistan Army's most important operational and planning roles, he relocated to General Headquarters in January 2025.
