North Korea tested a variant of its flagship Hwasong-11 ballistic missile in a launch hailed by leader Kim Jong Un, its state media reported.
The country fired five tactical ballistic missiles that hit their target area, around an island about 136 km (84.5 miles) away, with “high precision” on Sunday, the Korean Central News Agency said. Kim expressed “great satisfaction” over the results produced after five years of research, it said.
North Korea routinely tests ballistic missiles, citing what it calls US and South Korean threats to topple its leadership. The Hwasong is one of its most advanced missiles as the regime seeks to enhance its ability to deliver nuclear warheads.
