The Embassy of India in Mexico has issued a security advisory for Indian nationals residing in several violence-hit regions after the Mexican military killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, alias “El Mencho,” the powerful leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), during a high-intensity operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco.
According to official reports, El Mencho was wounded during the raid and died while being transported to Mexico City. His killing marks one of the most significant blows to organized crime in recent years and a major development in Mexico's anti-cartel campaign.
However, the operation triggered violent retaliation across multiple states, with cartel members reportedly torching vehicles, blocking highways and creating widespread panic in urban centres.
Cities such as Guadalajara witnessed deserted streets as residents sheltered indoors. Schools in several affected regions suspended classes amid security concerns.

In view of the recent spate of violent incidents, the Indian Embassy in Mexico has urged Indian nationals in Jalisco (including Puerto Vallarta, Chapala and Guadalajara), Tamaulipas (including Reynosa and other municipalities), as well as parts of Michoacán, Guerrero, and Nuevo León to shelter in place until further notice.
In its advisory, the Embassy asked citizens to avoid areas around law enforcement activity, remain aware of their surroundings, and minimise unnecessary movement outside their shelters.
In an advisory shared on X, the Embassy also urged citizens to monitor local media for updates, follow the directions of local authorities, avoid crowds, and inform family and friends about their safety.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump posted a cryptic message on Truth Social, writing, “We're winning too much, it's just not fair!”, amid reports that the cartel leader's killing is being viewed as a key milestone in Mexico's efforts to crack down on organised crime.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as security operations remain underway across affected regions.
